Kitchen Hacks: How to Spiralize (even if you don’t have one)

 

 

By now, if you’ve visited the kitchen section of your store, you have probably seen these crazy spiralizers – small “machines” that make strings out of your veggies (and fruit!).  It is great for those on low carb diets (because you can now exchange spaghetti with spiraled veggies in your pasta dishes).

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, this is what they look like:

This one cost about $30 but you can get a smaller version (works kinda like a hand held pencil sharpener!) for about $10.

Carrots, cucumbers and zucchini seem to be the most popular things to spiral but I have seen beets, apples and turnips spiraled as well (mine didn’t turn out so nice though!).

It’s a great way to make your salads look pretty…and if you have some extra time and have company coming over, it’s a nice way to make a boring salad look spectacular!!

But what if you don’t have a spiralizer?

Let’s take a look at what else you can use…

This is a mandoline.  If you have ever made french onion soup or scalloped potatoes, this will save you so much time!   Until a while ago, you would have had to shell out a lot of money to get a fancy mandoline (usually stainless steel).  But now you can get a sturdy plastic one for a fraction of the cost.  These are great because, with the flip of a switch, you can go from slicing potatoes, to making french fries to making matchstick potatoes.

If you are using it for a salad, your strips won’t be curly, but, if you use the smallest cutter and slice it on the long side, you will get fairly long strips.

This is a vegetable peeler with small edges that make tiny strips.  You can use it to make lemon strips for cocktails but you can also use it for hard veggies, like this…

I think I picked this up at a kitchen party (yes, I still go to those!!).  It’s a handy tool to have in your drawer (and it doesn’t take up a lot of space!).

Whichever you use, make yourself  a salad, throw on some dressing, add some protein (I added feta and black beans) and serve with some flatbread…
